New Amazigh Heritage Space Reshapes the Visitor Experience at Granada’s Alhambra

The inauguration of a permanent Amazigh heritage space within the historic Alhambra marks a significant step toward showcasing the often-overlooked contributions of Amazigh civilizations to the history of Al-Andalus.

Located in an 11th-century cloister inside the iconic palace complex in Granada, the new cultural space offers visitors a deeper understanding of the role played by Amazigh dynasties in shaping one of Europe’s most influential medieval civilizations.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, André Azoulay described the initiative as a transformative addition to the Alhambra, allowing millions of annual visitors to discover a richer and more complete narrative of Andalusian history.

The project was initiated by the Dr. Leïla Mezian Foundation and pays tribute to the vision of the late Dr. Leïla Mezian Benjelloun, who championed the idea before her passing. The initiative was made possible through cooperation between cultural institutions in Morocco and Spain, including the Andalusian authorities responsible for preserving the Alhambra.

The exhibition highlights the historical influence of the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties, as well as the Nasrid Kingdom, whose political, architectural and cultural achievements left a lasting imprint on the Iberian Peninsula. Through historical materials and educational content, the space seeks to present a broader understanding of the diverse forces that shaped Al-Andalus.

According to Azoulay, the project positions the Alhambra as a pioneer among European cultural institutions by embracing a more inclusive historical narrative that reflects the complexity and diversity of the region’s past. He stressed the importance of presenting history in a comprehensive and balanced manner, allowing visitors to engage with the full spectrum of cultural influences that contributed to Andalusian civilization.

The initiative also reflects growing efforts to strengthen cultural dialogue across the Mediterranean and preserve shared heritage. By bringing Amazigh history into one of Spain’s most visited monuments, the project reinforces the enduring links between Morocco and southern Spain.

Azoulay further praised the collaboration between public institutions and private foundations that helped bring the project to life, describing it as a model for future heritage initiatives. He also highlighted Morocco’s commitment to promoting cultural diversity and historical preservation under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, noting that the Kingdom continues to place its rich heritage and plural identity at the heart of its development vision.

With the opening of the Amazigh Space, visitors to the Alhambra can now explore a previously underrepresented chapter of Andalusian history, offering a more complete picture of the civilizations that shaped one of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable cultural landmarks.
