Morocco and Greece are moving to deepen their bilateral partnership, with Rabat and Athens preparing a new roadmap aimed at expanding cooperation well beyond traditional diplomatic exchanges.
The renewed momentum emerged from talks in Athens between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Greek counterpart George Gerapetritis. Bourita’s visit is particularly significant as it marks the first visit by a Moroccan foreign minister to Greece at this level in more than 30 years.
The two officials agreed that stronger political dialogue should be accompanied by more frequent high-level visits and closer consultations on regional and international issues. The objective is to turn the positive political relationship into a broader and more diversified partnership.
Economic cooperation is expected to be one of the main pillars of the next phase. The planned roadmap will cover trade, investment and green energy, alongside strategic sectors such as defense, tourism and maritime transport. Cooperation in culture, justice and consular affairs is also expected to receive greater attention.
Athens and Rabat are also looking to make their existing bilateral mechanisms more effective. Bourita and Gerapetritis stressed the need to accelerate institutional cooperation and update the legal framework governing relations between the two countries, with the aim of creating more practical opportunities for joint projects and exchanges.
The process is expected to gain further momentum with a forthcoming visit by the Greek foreign minister to Morocco. Such an exchange would provide an opportunity to translate the commitments made in Athens into concrete initiatives.
The Moroccan-Greek rapprochement also has a wider European dimension. The two ministers underlined Greece’s contribution to strengthening Morocco-EU relations and welcomed the outcomes of the 15th session of the Morocco-EU Association Council, as well as the launch of the new Pact for the Mediterranean.
Security cooperation remains another area of convergence. Morocco and Greece highlighted their cooperation within international organizations and pointed to shared efforts against terrorism and irregular migration. Both countries also emphasized their contribution to regional and international stability, security and peace.
For Morocco, stronger ties with Greece offer an additional channel for cooperation with a European Union member state located at a key crossroads between Europe, the Mediterranean and the wider region. For Greece, closer relations with Morocco can reinforce its engagement with North Africa and open new avenues in trade, energy, tourism and maritime cooperation.
The next stage will therefore depend on how quickly the planned roadmap is converted into operational agreements, giving the renewed political momentum between Rabat and Athens a more lasting economic and strategic dimension.
