Morocco and the Philippines Look to Deepen Ties After 50 Years of Diplomacy

Half a century after establishing diplomatic relations, Morocco and the Philippines are looking to expand cooperation across a range of strategic sectors, building on decades of political dialogue, economic exchanges and growing people-to-people connections.

Philippine Ambassador to Morocco Leslie Baja highlighted the strength of the relationship between the two countries, describing the past 50 years as a solid foundation for a new phase of bilateral cooperation. He pointed to high-level visits, multiple agreements and closer cultural ties as key achievements that have strengthened relations between Rabat and Manila.

Economic cooperation is emerging as one of the most promising areas for future growth. According to the ambassador, trade between the two countries has increased significantly in recent years, with bilateral exchanges showing strong momentum despite still having substantial room for expansion.

Morocco’s strategic position as a gateway to Africa and Europe complements the Philippines’ role as an entry point to Southeast Asia and the ASEAN region. This geographic advantage creates new opportunities for businesses seeking access to wider regional markets.

Several sectors have been identified as having strong potential for collaboration, including agribusiness, aeronautics, electronics and textiles. The Philippines also remains an important importer of Moroccan phosphate products, a trade relationship that continues to support economic ties between the two nations.

The ambassador also welcomed the sectoral partnership agreement signed between Morocco and ASEAN in 2023, describing it as an important framework for strengthening cooperation not only between Morocco and the Philippines but also at a broader regional level.

On regional development, Baja praised Morocco’s Atlantic-focused initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and economic opportunities for African countries. He noted that enhanced regional integration could contribute to greater economic growth, political stability and long-term prosperity across the continent.

Addressing the Moroccan Sahara issue, the diplomat reiterated his country’s support for the United Nations-led political process and recalled that the Philippines had previously described Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a credible basis for reaching a solution. He also emphasized the significance of recent international developments related to the issue and expressed hope for further progress in the political process.

As part of the celebrations marking five decades of diplomatic relations, a new book documenting the history of Morocco-Philippines ties is set to be presented. The publication traces the evolution of bilateral relations and highlights the contributions of both Moroccan and Filipino communities in bringing the two nations closer together.
