Rabat has taken another step in consolidating its role as a leading cultural hub in Africa with the inauguration of the headquarters of the African Capitals of Culture (ACC), a continental institution dedicated to promoting cultural cooperation, creativity and sustainable development across the continent.
The new headquarters was officially inaugurated in the Moroccan capital in the presence of cultural leaders, diplomats and representatives from several African countries. The initiative reflects Morocco’s growing commitment to strengthening cultural ties within Africa and supporting projects that place culture at the center of development strategies.
The institution is expected to serve as a coordination platform for future editions of the African Capitals of Culture program, while facilitating collaboration between cities, artists, researchers, cultural operators and local authorities throughout the continent.
Speaking during the ceremony, participants highlighted Africa’s rich cultural diversity and the growing importance of cultural and creative industries as engines of economic growth, social inclusion and innovation. They emphasized the need to create stronger ecosystems that enable African talent to thrive and contribute to the continent’s development.
The project also reflects Morocco’s African vision under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which places human development, cultural exchange and South-South cooperation among its key priorities. Officials noted that culture can play a strategic role in strengthening connections between African nations and promoting shared prosperity.
Representatives of the African Capitals of Culture initiative recalled that the project was launched during the Africities Summit held in Marrakech in 2018. Since then, it has evolved into a major continental program aimed at encouraging cities to invest in culture as a driver of transformation and development.
Beyond hosting meetings and institutional activities, the new headquarters will support future host cities and help expand networks among cultural stakeholders across Africa. It will also contribute to the promotion of innovative projects linked to heritage, arts, education and creative industries.
The inauguration further reinforces Rabat’s position as a center for cultural diplomacy and continental dialogue, while highlighting Morocco’s ambition to play an active role in shaping Africa’s cultural future.
