Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations announced the arrest of two suspected extremists affiliated with the terrorist organization Islamic State during coordinated security operations carried out in Midelt and the Douar Douibat area in Youssoufia.
According to a statement released by the BCIJ, the operation was conducted based on intelligence provided by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance as part of Morocco’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts aimed at preventing extremist threats targeting national security and public safety.
Preliminary investigations and surveillance operations revealed that the two suspects, both aged 19, had allegedly pledged allegiance to the leader of the Daesh organization and were preparing potential terrorist attacks inspired by so-called “lone wolf” tactics.
Authorities said the planned acts were intended to target public order, civilian safety and sensitive infrastructure within Morocco.
The suspects were placed in custody pending their transfer to BCIJ investigators, where a judicial inquiry will continue under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office responsible for terrorism-related cases.
Investigators are working to determine the scope of the suspects’ extremist activities and identify any possible connections with international terrorist networks or affiliated organizations.
Moroccan security services have intensified counterterrorism operations in recent years, with authorities regularly highlighting the importance of intelligence coordination and preventive action in dismantling extremist cells before attacks can be carried out.
