The Green Assets Cluster has officially launched its operations, marking a significant milestone for Morocco’s renewable energy sector by becoming the country’s first accredited local issuer of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC). The announcement was made during the “Green Assets Connect” event held on July 16 at Casablanca Finance City, bringing together more than 50 representatives from businesses, renewable energy producers, financial institutions, public authorities and international partners.

The accreditation allows the association to issue internationally recognized I-REC certificates in Morocco, providing renewable electricity producers with a local certification service for the first time. Until now, Moroccan companies had to rely on foreign organizations to complete the certification process, often resulting in additional administrative complexity.

The I-REC standard has become an essential tool for companies seeking to demonstrate that the electricity used in their operations comes from renewable sources such as solar and wind power. These certificates support environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments, Net Zero strategies and growing international supply chain requirements, particularly for exporters serving global markets.

By acting as the national issuer, the Green Assets Cluster will oversee the registration of renewable energy facilities, verify production data according to international standards and issue certificates through the global I-REC registry. The new local service is expected to simplify certification procedures while improving the competitiveness of Moroccan renewable energy producers and industrial companies.

Speaking on the occasion, Wiam Samir, President of the Green Assets Cluster, said the accreditation provides Moroccan producers and manufacturers with direct access to a certification process that meets international standards. She noted that the initiative will make globally recognized renewable energy certification more accessible while supporting companies pursuing their energy transition goals.

The launch comes as Morocco continues to strengthen its renewable energy ambitions and expand mechanisms that enhance the transparency and traceability of green electricity. Having a locally accredited issuer is expected to increase confidence in the country’s renewable energy market and improve the international recognition of electricity generated from clean sources.

Travis Caddy, Director of Business Development at Evident, part of the Xpansiv Group and the international organization overseeing the I-REC standard, welcomed the partnership. He highlighted Morocco’s growing leadership in the energy transition and expressed confidence in the Green Assets Cluster’s ability to manage the certification system according to the highest international standards while supporting the development of a transparent and credible green electricity market.
