Trent Kelly, a member of the United States House of Representatives, reiterated in Rabat his support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, while also backing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.
Speaking after a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and a delegation of American lawmakers visiting the Kingdom, the U.S. congressman described the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a credible framework for resolving the issue under the umbrella of the United Nations process.
Kelly also highlighted the long-standing strategic relationship between the Morocco and the United States, emphasizing that Morocco was the first country to recognize American independence. He praised what he described as 250 years of friendship and partnership between Rabat and Washington.
The visit by the American congressional delegation comes amid continued diplomatic momentum surrounding the Moroccan Sahara issue and growing international backing for Morocco’s autonomy plan within international political circles.
