Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has commissioned the first phase of a major infrastructure project aimed at strengthening and securing the drinking water supply for the city of Settat and surrounding communities. The overall investment amounts to MAD 210 million, reinforcing the Kingdom’s efforts to improve water infrastructure and ensure long-term water security.
The first phase was inaugurated by ONEE Director General Tarik Hamane and Settat Governor Mohamed Ali Habouha during an official ceremony held on July 21.
This initial stage introduces a new water transmission system connected to the Daourat water treatment plant, providing an additional 480 liters per second of capacity. The project doubles the existing supply, increasing total flow to 1,000 liters per second to better meet growing demand across the region.
Costing MAD 160 million, the first phase was financed by ONEE through a loan from the German Development Bank (KfW). The works included the installation of a 40-kilometer DN 800 pipeline, the modernization of pumping equipment at three pumping stations, and the deployment of a remote monitoring and control system to improve network management and operational efficiency.
A second phase, valued at MAD 50 million, is currently under construction with financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB). This stage includes the installation of an additional 5-kilometer DN 800 pipeline within the city of Settat, with commissioning scheduled for the end of September 2026.
Once fully completed, the project will significantly enhance the reliability of drinking water supplies for Settat and neighboring communities while supporting the region’s economic and sustainable development.
The initiative also underscores ONEE’s central role in delivering strategic infrastructure projects across Morocco under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, with a continued focus on improving essential public services and strengthening the country’s water resilience.
