Morocco and Spain have signed a new cooperation agreement aimed at boosting the development of triathlon through closer collaboration in athlete training, technical expertise, and sports development.

The agreement was signed in Larache on the sidelines of the Larache International Triathlon, held from July 3 to 5. It brings together the Royal Moroccan Triathlon Federation (FRMTI) and the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI) in a strategic partnership designed to deepen cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

The partnership focuses on improving athlete performance, strengthening coaching standards, and expanding training opportunities for coaches, referees, and competition organizers. It also supports the development of triathlon clubs and youth academies, with an emphasis on education and long-term talent development.

Under the agreement, Moroccan and Spanish athletes, coaches, and officials will take part in joint competitions, training camps, and exchange programs. A bilateral committee will oversee the implementation of the partnership and coordinate future initiatives in technical, organizational, and sporting areas.

FRMTI President Majid Amahroq described the agreement as a significant milestone for Moroccan triathlon, noting that Spain is one of the world’s leading nations in the sport, with Olympic and world champions. He said the partnership will allow Morocco to benefit from Spanish expertise while improving the skills of its coaches, referees, and sports administrators.

The cooperation is already producing concrete results. Two Spanish international referees have officiated at the 19th African Triathlon Cup in Larache, while Moroccan referees and athletes are scheduled to participate in an upcoming competition in Pontevedra, Spain.

FETRI President José Hidalgo Martín said the agreement formalizes a relationship that has already been developing between the two federations. He emphasized that both organizations share the ambition of raising the standard of triathlon through knowledge exchange, technical cooperation, and the preparation of elite athletes for international competitions.

Larache is currently hosting hundreds of triathletes from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and other regions as part of the African Triathlon Cup, which serves as a qualifying event for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
