Morocco has reaffirmed its growing role in global road safety after the United Nations acknowledged the Kingdom’s contributions during the High-Level Meeting on Improving Road Safety held at the UN General Assembly in New York.
Addressing the meeting, Minister of Transport and Logistics Abdessamad Kayouh said Morocco’s progress in road safety reflects the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has made the protection of human life and safer roads a national priority while positioning the Kingdom as a trusted international partner in the sector.
The minister highlighted Morocco’s Integrated National Road Safety Strategy 2030, which is aligned with the Global Road Safety Plan. The strategy focuses on stronger governance, effective law enforcement, modern infrastructure, education and training, alongside the integration of digital technologies, artificial intelligence and innovation to improve road safety outcomes.
Kayouh also recalled the importance of the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, hosted by Morocco in Marrakech in February 2025. The event brought together international decision-makers and experts, resulting in the adoption of the Marrakech Declaration, a framework designed to accelerate global action aimed at reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries.
Another major outcome of the Marrakech conference was the launch of the Mohammed VI International Road Safety Award. The initiative promotes innovation, encourages the sharing of best practices and strengthens international cooperation to improve road safety worldwide.
The UN High-Level Meeting concluded with the adoption of the Progress Declaration, a document that incorporates several proposals submitted by Morocco. Among them are references to the Marrakech Declaration, recognition of the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference held in Marrakech, and acknowledgment of the Royal initiative establishing the Mohammed VI International Road Safety Award.
According to Moroccan officials, these developments represent significant international recognition of the Kingdom’s leadership and its contribution to strengthening global governance in road safety.
The Moroccan delegation included the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Hilale, and Benacer Boulaajoul, Director of the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA).
