Several Moroccan provinces are facing a spell of intense heat accompanied by thunderstorms, hail and strong wind gusts from Wednesday through Friday, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
An orange-level weather alert has been issued for a wide range of areas, with temperatures expected to reach between 42°C and 45°C in provinces including Kenitra, Aousserd, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Tata, Errachidia, Zagora, Marrakech, Rehamna, Sidi Slimane, Khemisset, Ouezzane, Larache, Taounate, Moulay Yacoub, Fez, Sidi Kacem, Meknes, Fquih Ben Salah, El Kelaa des Sraghna and Beni Mellal.
Other provinces are expected to experience temperatures ranging from 38°C to 42°C during the same period. The areas concerned include Settat, Sidi Bennour, Youssoufia, Taroudant, Khouribga, Khenifra, Chichaoua and Salé.
The weather conditions will not be limited to high temperatures. Thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong winds are also forecast, increasing the potential for locally difficult weather conditions.
In Aousserd province, rainfall of between 25 and 40 millimetres is expected from Wednesday at 2 p.m. until Thursday at 2 a.m., together with hail and strong wind gusts.
The latest warning adds to a series of heatwave and storm alerts issued across Morocco during the summer, reflecting the persistence of periods of sharply elevated temperatures in several parts of the Kingdom.
