Charges have been laid following the death of a Southern Albertan woman from earlier last week.

On Friday, November 19, Megan Eekma, 34, was travelling with another person from B.C. to Alberta.

During the trip, the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit says an interaction occurred, resulting in her death.

An autopsy was completed on Monday by the Calgary Officer of the Chief Medical Examiner.

On Tuesday, November 23, RCMP arrested Melissa Lynn Martens-Lagasse, 26, of Medicine Hat in relation to the incident.

She faces one count each of first degree murder and causing an indignity to human remains.

The accused did not speak to bail at a recent judicial hearing and made her first appearance in Lethbridge Provincial Court Thursday morning.
