Coronavirus Canada Updates: Ontario reports nearly 6,000 new COVID-19 cases

Ontario reported 5,979 new COVID-19 cases and 22 more deaths over a two-day span on Monday, as admissions to intensive care units (ICU) continue to rise.

There were 3,041 new infections on Saturday, and 2,938 new cases on Sunday.

The province did not report its Saturday data on Sunday due to the Easter holiday.

Toronto had the highest number of new infections reported Monday with 906, while Peel Region reported 533 and 391 cases were in York Region. Outside the GTA, 230 cases were reported in Ottawa.

As the number of cases spike, the number of patients admitted to ICUs hit a pandemic record high.

A daily report by Critical Care Services Ontario, which tracks hospitalizations, stated 482 people are currently in ICUs with a COVID-19-related critical illness, as hospitals near the breaking point for ICU capacity.

Health officials completed 46,400 tests on Saturday, while 36,600 tests were conducted on Sunday.

A total of 2,545,640 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered overall, and so far, more than 322,000 Ontarians have been fully vaccinated.
