Quebec stabbings: Attacker with sword kills two, injures five

Police in Quebec City early Sunday arrested a sword-wielding 24-year-old man on suspicion of killing two people and injuring five others in a stabbing rampage near the provincial legislature on Halloween.

The man was wearing medieval clothing and armed with a Japanese sword. Police said the suspect’s motive was personal.

Police said five victims have been transported to a hospital, however, there was no immediate word on their conditions.

“Last night we were thrust into a night of horror when a 24-year-old man who does not live in Quebec City came here with the clear intention of taking as many victims as possible,” said police chief Robert Pigeon.

“This horrific drama is a terrifying event that is beyond comprehension. This is an isolated gesture, it does not call into question the fact that Quebec is one of the safest cities in the world,” said Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume.

The suspect was from the Montreal area and the killing happened near the historic Chateau Frontenac hotel on Halloween, an area that is typically filled with tourists.
