Morocco Issues Orange Alert as Heatwave Intensifies

Morocco’s weather authorities have issued an orange-level alert warning of an intense heatwave that is expected to affect large parts of the country from Tuesday through Friday, with temperatures forecast to reach as high as 45°C in several provinces.

According to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), the highest temperatures, ranging between 43°C and 45°C, are expected in Zagora, Tata, Es-Semara, Assa-Zag, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab and Aousserd.

A broader group of provinces is also forecast to experience exceptionally hot conditions, with temperatures between 40°C and 43°C. These include Youssoufia, Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Errachidia, Khenifra, Boulemane, Chichaoua, Guercif, Taounate, Taza, Taroudant, Tinghir, Khouribga, Settat, El Kelaa Sraghna, Marrakech, Rehamna, Figuig, Jerada, Oujda-Angad, Taourirt and Guelmim.

The heatwave is expected to persist until Friday, increasing the risk of heat-related health issues, particularly for vulnerable groups such as older adults, young children and people with chronic illnesses. Authorities typically advise residents in affected areas to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day and limit strenuous outdoor activities whenever possible.

Summer heatwaves are common across inland and southern Morocco, where temperatures frequently exceed 40°C. Meteorologists continue to monitor the situation and recommend following official weather updates as conditions may evolve during the week.
