A horrific crash has claimed the lives of three people along Highway 3, in the Crowsnest Pass, east of Sparwood, B.C.

A news release from the Elk Valley RCMP said that on Monday, June 6, around 2:30 p.m., a westbound SUV was attempting to pass when it collided head-on with an eastbound tractor-trailer.

The impact of the collision caused the white, full-sized SUV to flip and almost immediately burst into flames.

Witnesses on the scene rescued the truck driver from his vehicle before it was also consumed by the fire. They were unable to get to anyone inside the other vehicle.

BC RCMP division media relations officer Sergeant Chris Manseau Quick says the SUV was later determined to have three deceased occupants inside.

The highway was closed for several hours after the crash.

The Elk Valley RCMP and the BC Coroner Service continue to investigate the collision.
