Police: Man dies after falling off balcony during break-in in North York

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man suspected of breaking into a North York apartment plunged to his death Christmas morning.

Toronto Police say the 34-year-old man fell from the balcony of a unit in the highrise.

Emergency personnel were called around 5:10 a.m. to the building at 155 Antibes Dr. — near the Bathurst St. and Finch Ave. W.

According to police, they received reports that the suspected burglar broke into an apartment and then tried to access an adjoining unit via the balcony.

He is believed to have fallen in the process and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Few details were immediately released and the identity of the victim has not been made public.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, which probes any serious injury or death involving police, says “preliminary information” suggests officers responded to the apartment building for “a disturbance call.”

“Upon arrival, officers located a man on an apartment balcony,” the SIU said in a statement released Sunday. “From a neighbouring balcony, the officers attempted to negotiate with him.”

“At approximately 6:50 a.m., the man fell from the balcony to the ground below,” the SIU added.
