Two people are dead following a motor vehicle incident on Highway 17 near Massey, which involved two tractor trailers and a passenger vehicle.

A media release issued by the OPP today noted that the passenger vehicle was travelling westbound and crossed the centre line, sideswiping the first tractor trailer. The passenger vehicle continued travelling westbound in the eastbound lane before hitting another tractor trailer head on.

The two occupants of the passenger vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deceased passenger of the vehicle has been identified as Patrick Heeley, 51, from Massey. The identity of the driver will be released pending a post-mortem examination that is scheduled to take place at the Centre of Forensic Sciences.

The Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, Anishinabek Police Services, Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services and the Sables-Spanish River Fire Department responded to the scene of the incident.

The OPP investigation is ongoing and is being assisted by the department’s Traffic Incident Management Team, a traffic collision investigator and a reconstructionist.
