A 55-year-old motorcyclist was killed when a tire detached from a trailer and bounced into oncoming traffic near Revelstoke.

The rider was headed east on Highway 1 at about 2:20 p.m. on Sunday when the loose tire hit his Harley Davidson.

Police say it appears the tire came loose from a 16-foot, single axle utility trailer being towed by a westbound Ford F350 pickup from Alberta, bounced into the eastbound lanes and narrowly missed another motorcyclist before hitting the other rider, who was from Sooke.

RCMP Insp. Chad Badry said a passenger on the Harley was injured but survived and is being treated at Royal Inland Hospital.

The man died despite life-saving efforts by a doctor from Germany and a nurse who were passing by on the highway.

The fatal crash is being investigated by the B.C. highway patrol, the B.C. commercial vehicle safety program and the B.C. Coroners Service.

Anyone with information, or dashcam footage from the area before the collision, about 34 kilometres west of Revelstoke, is asked to call police at 250-814-8173.
