Morocco international Azzedine Ounahi is set to continue his career in Greece after officially signing a four-year contract with Panathinaikos, returning to a club where he had already made a strong impression. The Greek side confirmed the midfielder’s arrival from Spanish club Girona on Thursday.
The 26-year-old midfielder is expected to bring additional creativity and experience to a Panathinaikos squad aiming to challenge at the top of the Greek Super League. His return comes two years after his first spell with the club, during which he quickly established a strong connection with supporters.
Ounahi played 37 matches for Panathinaikos during his previous stint in 2024, scoring five goals and providing seven assists. His performances made him one of the notable Moroccan players to feature in Greek football in recent seasons.
The move also marks another chapter in a career that accelerated after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Ounahi’s performances with Morocco attracted the attention of major European clubs, eventually leading to his transfer to Marseille in January 2023. During the 2023-24 campaign, he contributed to the French club’s run to the Europa League semi-finals.
A product of the Mohammed VI Football Academy, Ounahi began his early development at Raja Casablanca before moving to Strasbourg in 2018. He later joined Angers, where he established himself at the highest level of French football.
His international career has also become a major part of his profile. Ounahi made his Morocco debut in early 2022 and became an important member of the national team that reached the historic semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar.
He remains a key figure for the Atlas Lions. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he scored Morocco’s opening two goals in a 3-0 victory over Canada, helping the national team reach the quarter-finals. He now has 55 international caps and 11 goals for Morocco.
