Morocco Climbs into Global Top 15 as Melon Industry Gains Momentum

Morocco has strengthened its standing in the global fresh produce market after ranking among the world’s top 15 countries for melon production value in 2024, reflecting the growing competitiveness of its horticultural sector.

New figures based on FAO statistics show that the global melon industry generated a record €13.79 billion in production value last year. While China continued to dominate the market by a wide margin, Morocco secured the 14th position with an estimated production value of €89.9 million, outperforming several traditional producing countries.

The achievement highlights the steady development of Morocco’s melon industry, which has benefited from improved cultivation techniques, more efficient irrigation systems and increasing investment in export-oriented agriculture. These advances have enabled local producers to strengthen both productivity and product quality.

Morocco’s strategic location also continues to play a key role. Its proximity to European markets allows exporters to deliver fresh produce within short transit times, an advantage that has helped Moroccan melons gain ground with buyers seeking reliable supply and consistent quality throughout the season.

Unlike some of the world’s largest producers, whose harvests are largely consumed domestically, Morocco has built much of its growth around exports. European markets remain the primary destination, where demand is driven by strict quality standards, food safety requirements and competitive delivery schedules.

The latest ranking also reflects the country’s broader agricultural strategy of expanding high-value crops capable of generating stronger export revenues. Alongside berries, avocados and tomatoes, melons have become another segment contributing to Morocco’s growing reputation as a major supplier of fresh produce.

Globally, China retained its overwhelming lead with more than €8 billion in production value, followed by India and Türkiye. Japan, the United States and Spain also ranked among the world’s leading melon producers.

The figures are based on FAO’s consolidated data for 2024, making it the latest available snapshot of the global melon market. For Morocco, joining the world’s top 15 producers represents another sign of the country’s expanding influence in international agricultural trade and its continued focus on value-added horticultural production.
