Police: Surrey elementary students find handgun during morning recess

A student at Bothwell Elementary in Fraser Heights found a firearm on school grounds on Thursday.

In a statement, Const. Sarbjit Sangha said the student notified school staff who immediately brought the weapon into the school and notified police.

“The firearm has been seized and further work and analysis will be done to determine if there are any connections to any ongoing investigations,” Sangha said.

On Tuesday night, 24-year-old gangster Juvral Jabal was shot in the 16800-block of 104 Avenue about 500 metres from Bothwell Elementary. Jabal — a member of Brothers Keepers — was sitting in a vehicle with a woman who was injured.

Sangha said the RCMP was working closely with the Surrey school district and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which is handling the Jabal shooting case.

“Any time a firearm is located by a member of the public it’s concerning, and in this case it was an elementary school student,” Sangha said. “It shows the blatant disregard for the safety of others, from whoever disposed of this firearm.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477.
