She helped make the sound of The Supremes, but one of the singers of the iconic girl group has died.

Barbara Martin was 76.

Martin replaced original member Betty McGlown as part of the Motown group from 1960 to 1962. She joined the group shortly before being signed by Motown Records in 1960.

At the time, The Supremes were called The Primettes, the BBC reported.

The group that would eventually become platinum artists were at the time providing vocals and backup for other Motown groups.

She left the group to start a family just before they released “Meet The Supremes” in 1962, the group’s first album. She was not on the cover, but her vocals were part of the recordings, The Huffington Post reported.

The group remained together as a trio with Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland as part of the class of 1988.

Wilson posted to her Twitter account about Martin’s death, as did the group on its official Facebook site.
